What is a Certified Translator?

In Canada, certified translators and interpreters are members of provincial associations that come under the umbrella of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC). They have been certified under a peer-reviewed process, whether by passing a national certification exam or through the mentorship or dossier-review processes. This doesn’t mean that they are going to do a perfect job every time, but it does mean that the quality of their work has been evaluated and that they have been deemed to be able to work independently. As well, they are bound by codes of ethics and are accountable to their associations, the same way that doctors or engineers are.
